AF 1 sun glasses are one of the U.S. Air Force best kept secret. Manufactured under an exclusive license by American Optical, the official supplier to the U.S. military since 1958. Over 5 million pairs have been supplied to U.S. forces including ground and naval forces.
AO sun glasses are performance tested and are standard issue to all branches of the U.S. Military and are engineered to surpass all required Mil-Spec’s. What differentiates AF 1 glasses from other Aviator glasses is the exclusive Military Olive Drab finished plating over the steel alloy frames in conjunction with the toughened and polished distortion free True Green and True Grey lens, which effectively blocks all UV rays of the sun but still allows
objects to be seen clearly as they appear to the naked eye.
The FAA recommends that sun glasses shall be of the bayonet type so as to be able to slip easily under helmets and headsets and should fit snugly. The FAA also recommends that pilots only use Green or Grey lens as both colors offer true color.
AF 1 Sun Glasses are available with polarized lens & NON polarized lenses.
NON polarized are recommended for ALL pilots, because a polarized sun glass can make electronic instrumentation panels impossible to read and some windshield canopies to appear opaque. Note: Viewing through a Polarized sun glass can induce vertigo during steeply banked turns as the head tilts when relative to the horizon.
On a side note it should be mentioned that the manufacturer of AF 1 sun glasses produced the first sun glasses to be worn on the moon by Commander Neil Armstrong and the entire crew of Apollo 11 in 1969. Commander Armstrong’s glasses are on permanent display at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C.
